Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) part 1

With age, the muscles that strengthen and support the eyelids weaken, and the eyelids sag and accumulate fat, which leads to puffiness under the eyes, so the person looks older. The effect of sagging eyelids is not limited to the formal and aesthetic aspect only, but also has a functional effect as the drooping skin limits the window of vision and reduces peripheral vision, especially the side and upper parts of the field of vision. Blepharoplasty helps to get rid of the aforementioned vision problems and makes the eyes look more beautiful and wider, as they look younger.

When do we resort to eyelid surgery?

The drooping and sagging eyelids are often due to aging, or in very few cases, this sagging may be congenital, i.e. since birth.

– Excess sagging skin and fat in the upper eyelid can impede the proper opening of the eye and reduce the upper field of vision. Sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles give an aging appearance as well.

– We also resort to this operation when the lower eyelids pull down as a result of sagging and swelling, which affects the formal and aesthetic aspect.

Is it possible to tighten the eyelids during the face-lift procedure?

Yes, it is possible. Under general anesthesia, an eyelid lift is performed in conjunction with a face-lift, and thus we get a more youthful and completely tightened face.

What type of anesthesia is used in blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is often performed under local anesthesia, and it can be done under general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s condition, and this is what the specialist doctor determines.

What are the side effects of eyelid surgery?

1} Dry eyes, so the doctor prescribes drops after the operation that help moisturize the eye and prevent its dryness.

2} Infection with a bacterial or viral infection, in the event that the doctor did not comply with the conditions of sterilization during the procedure.

3} Distortion of vision for a temporary period after the operation.

4} The eye muscles may be injured if the blepharoplasty was performed by a non-expert or non-specialist surgeon.

5} Sensitivity to light, especially sunlight.

6} After eyelid surgery, swelling and bruising may occur in the eye for a temporary period.

How is eyelid surgery done?

Eyelid Surgery is often performed under local anesthesia

– Upper eyelid: Incisions are made along the upper eyelid fold that allows removal of some excess skin and fat, and then the wound is closed as cosmetic suturing is done using thin cosmetic threads to prevent the appearance of scars.

– Lower eyelid: the surgeon makes incisions just below the eyelashes line, where he removes the excess skin and fat, and then the incision is closed with cosmetic poles using very thin threads so as not to leave scars or traces after the operation.

Is there a specific age for eyelid surgery?

Most people who have eyelid surgery are over the age of thirty. In fact, there is no specific age for which it is forbidden to perform this operation, as there is no risk of performing it at younger ages. However, doctors recommend performing this operation after completing the age of 18.

Thus, we find that eyelid surgery is one of the operations that is characterized by a high success rate in beautifying eyelids, in addition to the speed of recovery after the operation, where the patient only needs a very short recovery period, after which he can return to his work and his daily life normally. It is also very rare for this procedure to leave scars, which makes it a favorite among many.
